This week, the Congressional Research Service (CRS) updated their report on “Government Shutdowns and Executive Branch Operations: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)”. This is a broad overview of how the Federal government prepares for a shutdown in the event that Congress does not pass one or more funding bills or a continuing resolution. With the increasingly common talk about a potential government shutdown at the end of this month, this is a topic of increasing interest.
Current Agency Contingency Plans can be found here. Specific agencies of potential interest here include:
Chemical
Safety and Hazard Investigation Board,
Department of Homeland
Security,
Environmental
Protection Agency,
Federal
Energy Regulatory Commission, and
National Transportation Safety Board.
Interestingly, there is no discussion about the effect of a
shutdown on the legislative branch or the federal courts.
