Data from PHMSA’s online database of transportation related chemical incidents that have been reported to the agency.

Incidents Summary

• Number of incidents – 506 (488 highway, 15 air, 3 rail, 0 water)

• Serious incidents – 4 (3 Bulk release, 1 evacuation, 1 injury, 0 death, 0 major artery closed, 0 fire/explosion, 15 no release)

• Largest container involved – 30,660-gal DOT 117J100W Railcar {Ethanol Or Ethyl Alcohol Or Ethanol Solutions Or Ethyl Alcohol Solutions} 3 of 8 manway swing bolts less than tool tight causing an estimated 2 gallons of ethanol to release.

• Largest amount spilled – 330-gal Plastic IBC {Alcoholic Beverages} Fork lift puncture.

Most Interesting Chemical: Methylcyclohexane: A clear colorless liquid with a petroleum-like odor. Flash point 25°F. Less dense than water and insoluble in water. Vapors heavier than air. Vapor or mist is irritating to the eyes, mucous membrane and upper respiratory tract and skin. Narcotic effects and dermatitis. (Source: CameoChemicals.NOAA.gov).
