Back in September, Rep Malliotakis (R,NY) introduced HR 9107, the States Helping Apprehend Rogue Exports Act. The bill would require State Departments of Motor Vehicles to share vehicle registration information with the federal government or risk losing access to federal grant funds. No deadlines are provided for the new requirements.
Moving Forward
Malliotakis is a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to which this bill was assigned for primary consideration. This means that the first term congress person could have sufficient influence to see this bill considered in Committee. I would expect that there would be significant opposition from Democrats and doubt that the bill could be approved in Committee. That would be expected to change in the 118th Congress, if Malliotakis were to reintroduce this bill next month.
Having said that, I am not sure that she is actually pushing
this bill. The bill was introduced on September 30th and was not
published until this last Monday, such a delay usually indicating a hold by the
sponsor. She might get substantial push back in her district if grants were
actually disallowed in her district because the State government dug their
heals in and kept the information sharing restrictions in place. I suspect that
the bill was more of a bargaining position than an actual legislative attempt.
