New CSB Investigators – 6-8-23

I got an interesting email from Rosearray, a long time reader that tracks the Chemical Safety Board more closely than I do. He pointed me at their CSB Directory page and noted that yesterday that page was updated to show a third Supervisory Chemical Incident Investigator. The new addition is Mark Wingard who left the CSB in 2019. So, we have an experienced investigator returning to the fold. That should be good news for the Boards investigative operations.

On a not so good note, however, we are fast approaching six-months since the CSB last updated (January 25th, 2023) their quarterly report on the CSB’s Accidental Release Database. While admittedly, they have not established a real strict reporting scheme (July 27, 2022; October 26, 2022; December 28, 2022; and January 25, 2023) this is the longest gap that they have had in publishing an update. Publicly sharing this information should be a priority for the Board.

With just over half a month to go before July 1, the CSB has completed and issued only two of the six investigations it scheduled to finish in the first half of 2023. This was per the revised Investigation Closure Plan of January 2023. It will be interesting to see how many of the remaining four investigations are closed in the short time remaining in the first half of this year.
