Yesterday the Chemical Safety Board (CSB) announced the publication of an update for their ongoing investigation of the explosion and multiple fires at a wood pellet processing facility in Freemont, NE. The July 29th, 2025, incident killed three people, including two children that were waiting in the breakroom at the facility. The report provides a brief timeline about the incident and a history of the Boards investigation of dust explosions.
Unfortunately, the Board has still not been able to access the facility because of the ongoing threat of building collapse due to the damage caused by the explosion and fires.
The Board’s investigation will focus on:
• Cause or probable
cause of the initiating dispersion of dust
• Events and
conditions at the facility prior to the incident
• Post-incident
equipment condition and failure analysis
• Properties of
combustible wood dust
• Industry guidance
for facilities that generate wood dust
• Regulatory
analysis
