Data from PHMSA’s online database of transportation related chemical incidents that have been reported to the agency.

Incidents Summary

• Number of incidents – 615 (587 highway, 24 air, 4 rail, 0 water)

• Serious incidents – 2 (2 Bulk release, 1 evacuation, 0 injury, 1 death, 0 major artery closed, 1 fire/explosion, 28 no release)

• Largest container involved – 31,700-gal DOT 111A100W1 Railcar {Diesel Fuel} Manway swing bolts were over tightened causing the manway to be misaligned.

• Largest amount spilled – 260-gal IBC {Sodium Hydroxide, Solution} Punctured (cause not reported) IBC.

Most Interesting Chemical: Benzylidene Chloride - A colorless oily liquid with a faint aromatic odor. Insoluble in water and denser than water. Strongly irritates skin and eyes. May be fatal if inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through skin. Used to manufacture dyes. (Source: CameoChemicals.NOAA.gov).
