Last month, Sen Hassan (D,NH) introduced S 4701, the Small Businesses Cybersecurity Act. The bill would establish a small business development center (SBDC) cybersecurity grant program in the Small Business Administration. The bill would authorize $20 million per year to fund the grant program.
Moving Forward
Hassan is not a member of the Senate Small Business
Cybersecurity Act to which this bill was assigned for consideration. This means
that it is unlikely that the bill will be considered by the Committee. I see
nothing in this bill to engender any organized opposition. I suspect that if
the bill were considered in Committee that it would receive at least some level
of bipartisan support. There would probably be sufficient bipartisan support on
the floor of the Senate to achieve 60+ votes on cloture motions, so the bill
could probably make its way through the floor consideration processes.
Unfortunately, the bill is not of great enough importance to take up the
necessary time for the legislative process in the limited time left in this
session.
