Yesterday, as the House and Senate were preparing to leave
for the weekend, 50 bills were introduced. Of those three may be of specific
interest to readers of this blog:
HR
4147 To amend title 49, United States Code, to provide certain port
authorities, and for other purposes. Rep.
Nadler, Jerrold [D-NY-10]
HR
4151 To promote the use of smart technologies and systems in communities,
and for other purposes. Rep.
Comstock, Barbara [R-VA-10]
S
2020 A bill to establish a voluntary program to identify and promote
Internet-connected products that meet industry-leading cybersecurity and data
security standards, guidelines, best practices, methodologies, procedures, and
processes. Sen. Markey, Edward J. [D-MA]
It is not clear whether or not HR 4147 or HR 4151 include
cybersecurity provisions at this point. If they do, they will receive further
mention.
S 2020 looks like it will be another overly broad effort by
Markey to address a very real cybersecurity concern. This bill will only receive
further mention here if the definition of ‘Internet-connected products’
includes industrial control systems.
