Data from PHMSA’s online database of transportation related chemical incidents that have been reported to the agency.

Incidents Summary

• Number of incidents – 600 (572 highway, 23 air, 5 rail, 0 water)

• Serious incidents – 4 (2 Bulk release, 2 evacuation, 1 injury, 0 death, 1 major artery closed, 2 fire/explosion, 28 no release)

• Largest container involved – 33,680-gal DOT 112J340W Railcar {Liquefied Petroleum Gas} Mechanical failure of PRV.

• Largest amount spilled – 6,500-gal DOT 105J500W Railcar {Carbon Dioxide, Refrigerated Liquid} Top liquid valve open, plug not in place.

• Total amount reported spilled in all incidents – 9341.6 gal
