This week both the House and Senate will be back in Washington following their Memorial Day week off. A fairly light schedule of hearings is currently scheduled, we may see additions of interest later in the week. Of interest here will be subcommittee hearings for marking up HR 7900. There is one domestic terrorism hearing scheduled in the Senate.
NDAA Markup
The following House Armed Services subcommittee markup hearings for HR 7900 may include cybersecurity issues:
Wednesday
- Cyber, Innovative Technologies, and Information Systems Subcommittee,
Wednesday
- Strategic Forces Subcommittee,
Wednesday
- Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee,
Thursday
- Tactical Air and Land Forces Subcommittee,
Thursday - Intelligence and Special Operations Subommittee,
The full House Armed Services Committee markup of HR 7900 will take place next week. The markup of the Senate version of the National Defense Authorization Act (not yet introduced) will start next week.
Domestic Terrorism
On Thursday, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on “Domestic Extremism in America: Examining White Supremacist Violence in the Wake of Recent Attacks”. No witness list is currently available.
Note that the HSGAC is using the term ‘domestic extremism’
instead of ‘domestic terrorism’. There are a whole slew of politically fraught
reasons for that word choice. Currently there is legally no such thing as ‘domestic
terrorism’ in the United States because no one has been able to craft a definition
of terrorist group that does not include political fringe elements of both the
right and left. The line between ‘fringe element’ and ‘extremist group’ is
going to be very difficult to draw. I suspect that topic will be discussed on
Thursday.
