Back in July Sen Peters (DMI) introduced S 2551, the Extending Anti-Terrorism Protections Act of 2025. The bill would authorize DHS to temporarily extend the duration of protections provided under the system of risk management set forth in the Support Anti-Terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies (SAFETY) Act of 2002. No new funding is authorized.
Moving Forward
Peters is a member of the Senate Homeland Security and
Governmental Affairs Committee to which this bill was assigned for consideration.
This means that there may be sufficient influence to see the bill considered in
Committee. Generally, I see nothing in this bill that would engender any
organized opposition. Having said that, I would not be surprised to hear that
Chairman Paul opposed the bill, which would effectively kill consideration of
the measure. I suspect that there would be some level of bipartisan support for
the bill in Committee, but probably not enough to carry it to the floor under
the unanimous consent process.
