Data from PHMSA’s online database of transportation related chemical incidents that have been reported to the agency.

Incidents Summary

• Number of incidents – 429 (388 highway, 35 air, 5 rail, 1 water)

• Serious incidents – 1 (0 Bulk release, 1 evacuation, 1 injury, 0 death, 1 major artery closed, 2 fire/explosion, 42 no release)

• Largest container involved – 33,970-gal DOT 112J340W Railcar {Liquefied Petroleum Gas} Two valves on empty (contains residue) car partially open with closure plugs hand tight and no sealing tape.

• Largest amount spilled – 60-gal DOT 407 Trailer {Flammable Liquids, N.O.S.} Employee unconnected hose during transfer operation.

Most Interesting Chemical: Isobutyl Acetate - A clear colorless liquid with a fruity odor. Flash point 64°F. Less dense than water (6.2 lb / gal) and insoluble in water. Vapors are heavier than air. (Source: CameoChemicals.NOAA.gov).
