Short Takes – 1-15-24

Why securing the OT environment against cyberattacks is vital. WEForum.org article.  Pull quote: “Despite existing frameworks to secure operational technology (OT) environments, cybersecurity controls often ease or are overlooked during key lifecycle phases, such as Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), shutdown maintenance, and brownfield services, increasing vulnerability to cyber threats. CISA's 2022 report highlights a 30% increase in OT system cyberattacks, with over 800 incidents. ENISA's findings corroborate this, showing that 63% of critical infrastructures faced cyber incidents, 55% targeting OT systems.” Interesting look at times of increased vulnerability in the OT environment, particularly chemical facilities.

Congressional leaders unveil 2-step plan to fend off shutdown. TheHill.com article. Pull quote: “The legislation, unveiled Sunday evening, would fund some areas of the federal government through March 1, while extending funding for the remaining agencies through March 8. It would be the third funding stopgap, known as a continuing resolution (CR), to pass since fiscal 2023 funding expired in September.”

SPECIAL NOTE: “Johnson told members that Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) will be hospitalized this week following a car crash and will not be in the Capitol, according to a GOP lawmaker on the call, which will make the conference’s job more difficult.”

Getting Into OT. SCADAMag.Infracritical.com article. Another great piece of advice from Jake Brodsky, works for any professional job in the process industry. Pull quote: “Like many other professions, if you aren’t learning something new frequently, you’re not fit for this line of work. You don’t need to know a lot to get in to this business. But if you want to thrive there, a little humility, working outside an office, and learning to ask good questions will go a long way.”
