Yesterday there were 12 bills introduced in the House and
Senate, but only one may be of specific interest to readers of this blog:
H Res
769 - Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the
healthcare, energy, telecommunications, and other sectors of the United States
economy should continue their sector-specific efforts to protect critical
infrastructure, to prevent information security breaches, and to prevent
cybersecurity breaches. Sponsor: Rep.
Terry, Lee [R-NE-2]
Actually this may be one of the silliest feel-good
resolutions that I have ever had the dubious pleasure to have read. After
listing the healthcare, the energy, and the telecommunications sectors in
identically worded security exhortations, it lumps everyone else into the
following:
“(O)ther industry sectors should continue their
sector-specific efforts to protect critical infrastructure, to prevent
information security breaches, and to prevent cybersecurity breaches (other
than for research and development purposes).”
I’m sure that businesses are going to re-double their
efforts after hearing this stirring oratory from Congress. PLEASE
