Chemical Transportation Incidents – Week of 3-7-26

 Reporting Background

Data from PHMSA’s online database of transportation related chemical incidents that have been reported to the agency. 

Incidents Summary  

• Number of incidents – 449 (423 highway, 23 air, 3 rail, 0 water) 

• Serious incidents – 2 (1 Bulk release, 0 evacuation, 0 injury, 0 death, 1 major artery closed, 1 fire/explosion, 30 no release)  

• Largest container involved – 26,487-gal DOT 111A100W1 Railcar {DIesel FuelLeaking BOV valve packing nut. 

• Largest amount spilled – 65-gal 5-gal plastic containers {Adhesives, Containing A Flammable LiquidImproperly secured containers (13) fell off truck. 

• Total amount reported spilled in all incidents – 906.2-gal

Most Interesting ChemicalMercury: An odorless, silvery metallic liquid. Insoluble in water. Toxic by ingestion, absorption and inhalation of the fumes. Corrosive to aluminum. Used as a catalyst in instruments, boilers, mirror coatings. (Source: CameoChemicals.NOAA.gov).
