Data from PHMSA’s online database of transportation related chemical incidents that have been reported to the agency. 

Incidents Summary  

• Number of incidents – 627 (584 highway, 33 air, 10 rail, 0 water) 
• Serious incidents – 5 (4 Bulk release, 0 evacuation, 1 injury, 0 death, 0 major artery closed, 10 fire/explosion, 30 no release)  
• Largest container involved – 30,270-gal DOT 117R100W Railcar {Alcohols, N.O.S.} Loose manway bolts. 
• Largest amount spilled – 573.8-gal DOT 117J100W Railcar {Petroleum Crude Oil} Liquid line valve open with no cap. 
• Total amount reported spilled in all incidents – 3305.7-gal

Most Interesting Chemical: Kerosene: A clear colorless to light amber liquid with a petroleum odor. Flash point 100°F. Less dense than water and insoluble in water. Vapors are heavier than air. (Source: CameoChemicals.NOAA.gov).
