9 Advisories Published – 7-14-20


Today the CISA NCCIC-ICS published eight control system security advisories for products from Siemens (6), Moxa and Advantech. They also published one medical device security advisory for products from Capsule Technologies.

NOTE: NCCIC-ICS also published 12 updates, but I will not try to get a report done on those this evening. Look for it tomorrow morning

Logo Advisory


This advisory describes a classic buffer overflow vulnerability in the Siemens LOGO! Web Server. The vulnerability was reported by Alexander Perez-Palma and Dave McDaniel from Cisco Talos and Emanuel Almeida from Cisco Systems. Siemens has new versions that mitigate the vulnerability. There is no indication that the researchers have been provided an opportunity to verify the efficacy of the fix.

NCCIC-ICS reports that a relatively low-skilled attacker could remotely exploit the vulnerability to  allow remote code execution..

Opcenter Advisory


This advisory describes three vulnerabilities in the Seiemens  Opcenter Execution Core. The vulnerabilities are self-reported. Siemens has a new version that mitigates the vulnerabilities.

The three reported vulnerabilities are:

• Cross-site scripting - CVE-2020-7576,
• SQL injection - CVE-2020-7577, and
• Improper access control - CVE-2020-7578
NCCIC-ICS reports that a relatively low-skilled attacker could remotely exploit the vulnerabilities to allow an attacker to obtain session cookies, read and modify application data, read internal information, and perform unauthorized changes. Should the attacker gain access to the session cookies, they could then hijack the session and perform arbitrary actions in the name of the victim.

SIMATIC S7 Advisory


This advisory describes an uncontrolled resource consumption vulnerability in the Siemens SIMATIC S7-200 SMART CPU family. The vulnerability was reported by Ezequiel Fernandez. Siemens has a new version that mitigates the vulnerability. There is no indication that Fernandez has been provided an opportunity to verify the efficacy of the fix.

NCCIC-ICS reports that a relatively low-skilled attacker could remotely exploit the vulnerability to allow an attacker to cause a denial-of-service condition.

UMC Stack Advisory


This advisory describes three vulnerabilities in the Siemens UMC Stack. The vulnerabilities were reported by Victor Fidalgo of INCIBE and Reid Wightman of Dragos. Siemens has new versions that mitigate the vulnerabilities. There is no indication that the researchers have been provided an opportunity to verify the efficacy of the fix.

The three reported vulnerabilities are:

• Unquoted search path or element - CVE-2020-7581,
• Uncontrolled resource consumption - CVE-2020-7587, and
• Improper input validation - CVE-2020-7588

NCCIC-ICS reports that a relatively low-skilled attacker could remotely exploit these vulnerabilities to allow an attacker to cause a partial denial-of-service condition on the UMC component of the affected devices under certain circumstances. This could also allow an attacker to locally escalate privileges from a user with administrative privileges to execute code with SYSTEM level privileges.

SIMATIC HMI Advisory


This advisory describes a cleartext transmission of sensitive information in the Siemens SIMATIC HMI Panels. The vulnerability was reported by Richard Thomas and Tom Chothia of the University of Birmingham.

NCCIC-ICS reports that a relatively low-skilled attacker could remotely exploit the vulnerability to allow an attacker to access sensitive information under certain circumstances.

SICAM Advisory


This advisory describes nine vulnerabilities in the Seimens SICAM MMU, SICAM T and SICAM SGU products. The vulnerabilities were reported by Luca Simbürger, Luca Hofschuster, Lukas Kahnert, Jakob Lachermeier, Christian Costa, Simon Huber, Lukas Sas Brunschier, Florian Freiberger, Florian Burger, Marie-Louise Oostveen, Magdalena Thomeczek, and Johann Uhrmann from Landshut University of Applied Sciences and Max Hirschberger, Simon Hofmann, and Peter Knauer from Augsburg University of Applied Sciences. Siemens has updates that mitigate the vulenrabilites. There is no indication that researchers have been provided an opportunity to verify the efficacy of the fix.

The nine reported vulnerabilities are:

• Out-of-bounds read - CVE-2020-10037,
• Missing authentication for critical function - CVE-2020-10038,
• Missing encryption of sensitive data - CVE-2020-10039,
• Use of password has with insufficient computational effort - CVE-2020-10040,
• Cross-site scripting - CVE-2020-10041,
• Classic buffer overflow - CVE-2020-10042,
• Basic XSS - CVE-2020-10043, and
• Authentication bypass by capture replay - CVE-2020-10045

NCCIC-ICS reports that a relatively low-skilled attacker could remotely exploit the vulnerability to allow an attacker to affect the availability, read sensitive data, and gain remote code execution on the affected devices.

Moxa Advisory


This advisory describes a stack-based buffer overflow in the Moxa EDR-G902 and EDR-G903 Series Routers. The vulnerability was reported by Tal Keren of Claroty. Moxa has a firmware patch that mitigates the vulnerability. There is no indication that Keren has been provided an opportunity to verify the efficacy of the fix.

NCCIC-ICS reports that a relatively low-skilled attacker could remotely exploit the vulnerability to  crash the device being accessed; a buffer overflow condition may allow remote code execution.

Advantech Advisory


This advisory describes six vulnerabilities in the Advantech iView device management application. The vulnerabilities were reported by rgod via the Zero Day Initiative. Advantech has a new version that mitigates the vulnerability. There is no indication that rgod has been provided an opportunity to verify the efficacy of the fix.

The six reported vulnerabilities are:

• SQL injection - CVE-2020-14497,
• Path traversal - CVE-2020-14507,
• Command injection - CVE-2020-14505,
• Improper input validation - CVE-2020-14503,
• Missing authentication for critical function - CVE-2020-14501, and
• Improper access control -CVE-2020-14499

NCCIC-ICS reports that a relatively low-skilled attacker could remotely exploit the vulnerabilities to allow an attacker to read/modify information, execute arbitrary code, limit system availability, and/or crash the application.

Capsule Technologies Advisory


This advisory describes protection mechanism failure in the Capsule Technologies SmartLinx Neuron 2 medical device platform. The vulnerability was reported by Patrick DeSantis of Cisco Talos (NOTE: Talos report includes exploit code). Capsule Technologies has a new version that mitigates the vulnerability. There is no indication that DeSantis has been provided an opportunity to verify the efficacy of the fix.

NCCIC-ICS reports that a relatively low-skilled attacker could use publicly available code to exploit the vulnerability to provide an attacker with full control of a trusted device on a hospital’s internal network.

1 Alert and 4 Advisories Published – 3-3-20

Yesterday the CISA NCCIC-ICS published a control system security alert for products from SweynTooth and four security advisories for products form Moxa, Omron, Phoenix Contact, and Emerson.

SweynTooth Alert


This alert describes multiple Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) vulnerabilities known as the SweynTooth vulnerabilities. The vulnerabilities were reported by Matheus E. Garbelini, Sudipta Chattopadhyay, and Chundong Wang of the Singapore University of Technology and Design. NCCIC-ICS is coordinating with chip vendors on a resolution of these vulnerabilities.

Last month I briefly reported on an advisory issued by Philips for these vulnerabilities.

Moxa Advisory


This advisory describes twelve vulnerabilities in the Moxa Moxa AWK-3131A wireless networking appliance. The vulnerabilities were reported by Jared Rittle, Carl Hurd, Patrick DeSantis, and Alexander Perez Palma of Cisco Talos. Moxa has a patch that mitigates the vulnerabilities. There is no indication that the researchers have been provided an opportunity to verify the efficacy of the fix.

NCCIC-ICS reports that a relatively low-skilled attacker using publicly available code could remotely exploit the vulnerabilities to allow an attacker to gain control of the device and remotely execute arbitrary code.

NOTE: Last Saturday I reported briefly on these vulnerabilities and provided links to the individual Talos reports that provide the proof-of-concept exploit code for these vulnerabilities.

Omron Advisory


This advisory describes an uncontrolled resource consumption vulnerability in the Omron PLC CJ Series. The vulnerability was reported by Jipeng You (XDU). Omron provided generic workarounds to mitigate the vulnerability.

NCCIC-ICS reports that a relatively low-skilled attacker could remotely exploit the vulnerability to cause a denial-of-service condition.

Phoenix Contact Advisory


This advisory describes an incorrect permission assignment for critical resource vulnerability in the Phoenix Contact Emalytics Controller ILC 2050 BI(L). The Phoenix Contact advisory notes that the vulnerability was reported by Anil Parmar. Phoenix Contact has a new version that mitigates the vulnerability. There is no indication that Parmar has been provided an opportunity to verify the efficacy of the fix.

NCCIC-ICS reports that a relatively low-skilled attacker could remotely exploit this vulnerability to allow an attacker to change the device configuration and start or stop services.

Emerson Advisory


This advisory describes an improper access control vulnerability in the Emerson ValveLink. The vulnerability is self-reported. Emerson has a new version that mitigates the vulnerability.


NCCIC-ICS reports that a relatively low-skilled attacker with uncharacterized access could exploit the vulnerability to allow arbitrary code execution.

Public ICS Disclosures – Week of 09-05-19


This week we have URGENT/11 updates from three ICS vendors; seven new vendor disclosures from Siemens, Schneider (4), Beckhoff (2) and Drager; six updates of previously issued advisories from Siemens (2), Schneider (3) and Yokogawa, and one exploit of a previously reported vulnerability for products from SMA Solar Technology.

Siemens Advisory


Siemens published an advisory describing twelve vulnerabilities in the Siemens SIMATIC WinAC
RTX (F) 2010. These vulnerabilities are known as Spectre, Meltdown, Spectre-NG, Foreshadow, L1 Terminal Fault (L1TF), ZombieLoad, and Microarchitectural Data Sampling (MDS). These vulnerabilities were reported by various researchers. Siemens has an update that mitigates the vulnerabilities.

Schneider Advisories


Modicon Controllers Advisory #1

Schneider published an advisory describing a file and directory information disclosure vulnerability in the Schneider Modicon brand of programmable logic controllers. The vulnerability was reported by Jared Rittle (Cisco Talos); the report includes proof-of-concept (POC) code. Schneider provides generic workarounds to mitigate the vulnerability.

Schneider published an advisory describing six vulnerabilities in the Schneider Modicon brand of programmable logic controllers. The vulnerabilities were reported by Jared Rittle and Patrick DeSantis (Cisco Talos) (the CVE links below are to the individual reports which contain POC code). Schneider provides generic workarounds to mitigate the vulnerability.

The six reported vulnerabilities are:

Uncaught exception (5) - CVE-2019-6841, CVE-2019-6842, CVE-2019-6843, CVE-2019-6844 and CVE-2019-6847; and
Clear-text transmission of sensitive information - CVE-2019-6846;

Modicon Controllers Advisory #4

Schneider published an advisory describing three vulnerabilities in the Schneider Modicon brand of programmable logic controllers. The vulnerabilities were reported by Jared Rittle (Cisco Talos) (the CVE links below are to the individual reports which contain POC code). Schneider provides generic workarounds to mitigate the vulnerability.

The three reported vulnerabilities are:

Uncaught exception vulnerability - CVE-2019-6848; and
Information exposure (2) - CVE-2019-6849 and CVE-2019-6850

Beckhoff Advisories


TwinCat Advisory

VDE-CERT published an advisory describing a divide by zero vulnerability in the Beckhoff TwinCAT real-time controller. The vulnerability was reported by Andreas Galauner from Rapid7. The Beckhoff advisory on this vulnerability reports that they are working on an update to mitigate the vulnerability.

CE Remote Display Advisory

Beckhoff published an advisory describing an incorrect login response vulnerability in the Beckhoff CE Remote Display. The vulnerability was reported by Chen Jie from NSFOCUS and Tijl Deneut from University Howest. Beckhoff has updates that mitigate the vulnerability. There is no indication that the researchers have been provided an opportunity to verify the efficacy of the fix.

Drager Advisory


Drager has published an advisory describing three vulnerabilities in the Drager Infinity® M300 patient monitor. Drager is self-reporting the vulnerabilities. Drager will be releasing a new version to mitigate the vulnerabilities in March 2020.

The three reported vulnerabilities are:

Network DDOS attack;
Repeated DDOS attacks; and
Information exposure

Siemens Updates


Industrial Products Update

Siemens published an update for an advisory that was originally published in May of 2017 and most recently updated on February 14th, 2019. The new information includes:

• Merged WinAC RTX 2010 SP2 and WinAC RTX F 2010 SP2 to SIMATIC WinAC RTX (F) 2010; and
• Added mitigation information for SIMATIC WinAC RTX (F) 2010

NOTE: I expect NCCIC-ICS to update their advisory this week.

SIMATIC S7 Update

Siemens published an update for an advisory that was originally reported in November 2018 and most recently updated on August 13th, 2019. The new information includes:

• Added CVE-2019-1125, CVE-2019-15666 and CVE-2019-15903; and
• Removed CVE2018-19591 from the list of fixed vulnerabilities

NOTE: NCCIC-ICS has not addressed these Linux vulnerabilities.

Schneider Updates


Floating License Manager Update

Schneider published an update for an advisory that was originally published in May 2019 and most recently updated on September 10th, 2019. The new information is updated remediations for EcoStruxure Power
Monitoring Expert.

NOTE: NCCIC-ICS may update their advisory, but they did not update for the last Schneider update.

SoMachine Update

Schneider published an update for an advisory that was originally published on August 13th, 2019. The new information is adding SoMove FDT to the list of affected products.

NOTE: NCCIC-ICS did not address this vulnerability.

Embedded Web Server Update

Schneider published an update for an advisory that was originally published in November 2018 and most recently updated on June 11th, 2019. The new information includes mitigation information for the M340 controller.

 NOTE: NCCIC-ICS did not address these vulnerabilities.

Yokogawa Update


Yokogawa published an update for an advisory that was originally published on September 27th, 2019. The new information includes updated affected version data and mitigation measures for Exaquantum.

NOTE: NCCIC-ICS will probably update their advisory this week.

SMA Exploit


Borja Merino published an exploit for a cross-site forgery vulnerability in the SMA Sunny WebBox. An advisory for the vulnerability was published on October 8th, 2019.

ICS-CERT Publishes 3 Advisories and 2 Siemens Updates


Today the DHS ICS-CERT published three control system security updates for products from Leão Consultoria e Desenvolvimento de Sistemas (LCDS), Moxa, and Rockwell. They also updated two previously published control system security advisories for products from Siemens.

LCDS Advisory


This advisory describes an improper check of handling of exceptional conditions vulnerability in the LCDS LAquis SCADA. The vulnerability was reported by Karn Ganeshen. LCDS has a new version that mitigates the vulnerability. There is no indication that Ganeshen has been provided an opportunity to verify the efficacy of the fix.

ICS-CERT reports that a highly-skilled attacker with local access could exploit this vulnerability to cause the device an attacker is accessing to crash, resulting in a structured exception handler overflow condition, which may allow code execution.

Moxa Advisory


This advisory describes an information exposure vulnerability in the Moxa MXview, network management software. The vulnerability was reported by Michael DePlante of Leahy Center for Digital Investigation at Champlain College. Moxa developed a new version to mitigate the vulnerability. There is no indication that DePlante has been provided an opportunity to verify the efficacy of the fix.

ICS-CERT reports that a relatively low-skilled attacker could remotely exploit this vulnerability to read the private key of the web server, which may allow a remote attacker to decrypt encrypted information.

Rockwell Advisory


This advisory describes six vulnerabilities in the Rockwell MicroLogix Controller. The vulnerabilities were reported by Jared Rittle and Patrick DeSantis of Cisco. Rockwell has provided mitigation strategies in their customer notification (registration required). There is no indication that the researchers were provided an opportunity to verify the efficacy of the fixes.

The six reported vulnerabilities (according to ICS-CERT) are:

Improper authentication (6) - CVE-2017-12088, CVE-2017-12089, CVE-2017-12090, CVE-2017-12092, and CVE-2017-12093

NOTE: Rockwell does not use the ‘improper authentication’ description for any of the six (actually 17) vulnerabilities. Instead they report (using the same CVE numbers):

• Denial of service via ethernet functionality - CVE-2017-12088;
• Denial of service via download functionality - CVE-2017-12089;
• Denial of service – SNMP-set request - CVE-2017-12090;
• Access control vulnerabilities (12) - CVE-2017-14462 thru CVE-2017-14473;
• File-write vulnerability in memory module - CVE-2017-1209; and
• Malicious register session packets lead to communication loss - CVE-2017-12093

ICS-CERT reports that a relatively low-skilled attacker could remotely exploit these vulnerabilities to cause denial of service, disclosure of sensitive information, communication loss, and modification of settings or ladder logic.

SCALANCE Update


This update provides additional details on an advisory that was originally published on November 28th, 2017. The new version provides updated mitigation information for the SCALANCE W1750D.

Building Technologies Products Update


This update provides additional details on an advisory that was originally published on April 3rd, 2017. The new information provides a link to the updated LMS. I mentioned this new information in my earlier post.
