Senate Confirms Mayorkas as DHS Secretary

This afternoon the Senate voted 56 to 43 to confirm Alejandro Nicholas Mayorkas as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. Six Republican moderates joined the Democrats in voting to give the advice and consent of the Senate to the nomination. Those Republicans were:

• Capito (R-WV),

• Collins (R-ME),

• Murkowski (R-AK),

• Portman (R-OH),

• Romney (R-UT),

• Sullivan (R-AK).

I suspect that these six will find themselves voting with the Democrats on a number of occasions over the next two years. It will be interesting to see how much flack they get from the Republican leadership.

Earlier in the afternoon they voted 86 to 13 to confirm Peter Paul Montgomery Buttigieg as Secretary of Transportation.
