HR5533 and HR5577 Hearing Scheduled

The Environment and Hazardous Materials subcommittee of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce have finally (see: "HR 5577 Status Update – 5-29-08") gotten around to scheduling a hearing on Chemical Facility Security. They are including both bills, the CFATA of 2008 and an extension of the current section 550 authority for CFATS, in the hearing.

There is no witness list posted yet. After watching the committee web site for a couple of months now, I don’t expect to see one until maybe the day before the hearing. Chairman Dingle is not as proactive a user of the internet as Chairman Thompson.

This subcommittee still does not officially have a chairman. Hilda L. Solis (D, CA) is still listed as the Vice Chair and will probably be conducting the hearing. Albert R. Wynn (D, MD), the previous Chairman, resigned from the committee on April 9th. Supposedly he is resigning from Congress this month and is rumored to be moving into a pro-chemical industry lobbying firm.

According to her web site Congresswoman Solis is "a nationally-recognized leader on environmental justice". Her web site does not include any mention of chemical facility security, but she is not expected to be a champion of the chemical industry.
